Rescue Me ID: 16-12-06-00427GRACE (female)

Border Collie Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Grace is a 2-3 year old, 38 lb., cattle dog/border collie mix, with a low to moderate energy level. She's extremely sweet and affectionate once she feels she can trust you. More than anything, she wants to be loved and close to her person. She'll jump up to hug and give you sweet kisses. Currently, everything around her is new and overwhelming to her. Grace is very shy, and extremely cautious and nervous when meeting new people. Grace's fosters have been working with her every day on training, and to socialize her. She is as smart as they come, loves her training sessions, and is fun to train. As a loving, eager to please girl, she a fast ... (Read More)learner, who has come very far in her training over the last eight weeks. She knows her name, sit, down, touch, jump, hi five and shake. Her recall is also good. In one night her fosters taught her to crawl, and to roll to her side to settle. Grace's training mostly takes place in the house, where she is most comfortable. She would benefit from work with a one on one trainer, and brain games. Grace is our Eliza Doolittle. She was found as a terrified stray, who avoided all creatures. Besides being initially fearful of unknown people, she seems to have had no prior training, and no social skills and likely no past interactions with other dogs. She is very awkward and stiff, as if unsure about how to behave with another dog. She tends to rush over to other dogs and freezes up; and when they move, she will immediately try to herd or control their movements. Grace does not know how to play with other dogs and is not interested in fetch or toys at all. She has only recently learned to play tug with her fosters. For fun, she enjoys her chewing items and receiving attention from her humans. When you cuddle with her, Grace melts in your arms and is big on giving kisses, and rolls over to ask for belly rubs. If you pull your hands away while petting her, she will begin to burrow into your arms or lap. She wants to be a lap dog! During most of the day, she is in the house where she is most relaxed and happy. Grace is calm in the house and crate. She is able to entertain herself with interactive food toys and marrow bones. However, she wants TONS of attention before she'll self entertain or settle. As she is feeling more secure, she is now settling much more quickly. For exercise, her fosters take Grace to an enclosed field to run around. Grace has made great strides, and can walk or play in a park for up to 30 minutes. At first, she would melt down after 10-15 minutes, from the cars, noise, people and dogs. Grace is completely housebroken. She may hold it for hours, if she is someplace where she is not comfortable. Grace is also getting more relaxed on car rides, since nearly all her rides have been to do fun things. We recommend that she ride in a crate when in the car. When meeting new people, Grace is quite cautious and will usually hide behind her person. She will warm up to you, if you go slow and give her space. People first meeting her should ignore her or toss treats from a distance. Grace is very sensitive to prolonged eye contact from new people. She will growl to communicate that she feels uneasy, but nothing more. Since Grace has a tough time meeting people in general, we do not recommend her for a home with children. Quick movements get her hackles up and she wants to chase. She reacts this way with squirrels and cats encountered on walks. We have a herding aptitude test scheduled for her. Grace walks fairly nicely on leash, until there is a trigger (seeing a cat, dogs walking on leash or barking behind fences). She will bark, pull, and lunge. Her fosters are working on this reactivity, and report that she is making good progress, with much less barking and pulling in these situations. We see Grace as basically a submissive dog. However, she is still socially awkward. Her fosters believe she will eventually be fine with other polite or disinterested, adult dogs, but to get there, all dog meetings must be positive experiences. Until she becomes more dog social, we don't recommend her in a home with other dogs, especially young energetic ones. In summary, Grace is a sweet, loving girl, who has endured extreme unknown trauma. She needs plenty of TLC, patience, reassurance, time, encouragement, and slow positive exposure to new things, to learn how to be happy and confident. Grace is making excellent progress with her fosters, but her adopter(s) will need to continue the work. She is NOT for a novice dog owner. Grace's fosters feel she would be be happy in a home with a small yard and a person who enjoys training activities. In the yard, she should not be left alone. If stressed, she may dig and attempt to escape. Grace's foster also does NOT recommend her for someone with an active (running, hiking) lifestyle, or who wants to take her everywhere with them. If you are interested in meeting Grace, please complete our adoption form at hittgv.org (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-11-28-00332Coco (female)

Border Collie Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Most Cats
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Coco's siblings were all adopted through CCHD Rescue, Molly, Margaret, Jimmy and Jake. Just under 4 years old, Coco is 1/2 Aussie 1/2 Border Collie. Please read what Lisa, caregiver to the humans that produced these dogs, and advocate for Coco and her siblings wrote about her: 'Her whelp date January 2013. - female - red (brown) and white. She is very petite at approximately 25 lbs. This little dog was not a favorite of the elderly couple who bred these dogs. She was the runt of the litter and said to 'not listen' or 'untrainable' since she was a pup. A relative of the couple states that she is crazy, but I feel she is vastly ... (Read More)misunderstood. She is very intelligent, in my opinion, and small which is a problem because she seems to figure out how to squeeze out or crawl through every enclosure. She had been penned by herself far from others with little socialization. She has a growl like she is feral. It is not a typical dog growl. However, she has never tried to be aggressive with me. When I arrived I built a 16' x 52' pen and put Coco, two other females of approximate age and my neutered 10 month old male, Oliver. She did very well and because Oliver knows no strangers, wants only to play with everyone, he and Coco hit it off and have played for hours. Coco and Oliver love to wrestle and play in the small pool of water. They will play tag and tug-o-war. They are very 'grabby' with their front legs. When she first met me she wrapped her front legs around one of my upper thighs and she had to be peeled off. Coco still gets out of the enclosure and has to be moved to an enclosure she can't escape. I tried to put her in with Margaret & Molly and she stayed in a corner and growled if the others tried to come near. They cowered in one corner and she another divided by 12 feet of open ground. Then I moved her to a 6' x 16' enclosure that shared a side with Margaret & Molly. Once they had about a week of acquaintance time through the fence, I moved all three into the 16' x 52' pen with the other three to play. Coco wanted to play with Molly, but Molly cowered and tried to hide from the others. Coco didn't want to play with Margaret. On another occasion when I entered the enclosure to refresh the pool water, Coco grabbed my ankle with her teeth, but did not bite me or leave a mark. More like her natural herding instinct. Another time she jumped up and grabbed the flabby part of my upper arm and pinched it with her teeth. Again I don't believe that she was being aggressive but this is how she plays with Oliver. They grab each other and wrestle and maul each other. If I reach out to her with my hand, she licks and nips with her teeth, in more of a happy playful manner. She barks at cats and chickens, but sometimes I think she does it almost for 'master approval'. Because when I observe her through the window, she lets cats come in to her enclosure and lay next to her. If Molly and Margaret barked 'There is a cat in your cage!' Coco would chase it out. I observed Coco having a mild seizure 8/18/2016. Was outside feeding the cats and dogs and observed Coco, unable to stand with out losing her balance. She looked drunk and scared. I was able to console her, got her to relax and not try walking around. It passed. She had regular bowel movements and ate her dinner within minutes of the seizure passing. The elderly couple could not confirm if she had it happen before. If my situation was different I would adopt her myself. I think she just needs love. Update: I have been working with her and she walks well on a leash and is excited whenever she sees me. I can get her to 'heel', 'halt', and 'sit'. I have been trying to work with 'down' and 'off' but it is harder for her to understand. She has growled with me when I have had to pick her up. She also growls when she is having to be re-introduced to the pack after training sessions.' Coco is a gorgeous dog, that had very little chance at life. No socialization until Lisa came on the scene. She now has a chance. Even a completely feral dog, can become the best companion. I can give 50 examples from my own rescue alone. Seizures can happen for a myriad of reasons, Sometimes it becomes a disorder, sometimes it's an isolated instance. It's full disclosure here, she was observed having one. But it was months ago and none observed before or since. My own childhood collie was epileptic for the entire 15 years we had her. You manage with a dog you love. Coco deserves a chance. Border Collie Mix    Age: Adult

Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Dio is an amazing dog who was found as a scared stray in Hemet. We estimate him to be about 4-5 years old. When Dio came to us, he had a huge bulge on his rear foot (which you can see in his picture, in addition to the bunny ears!). We have since had the mass tested (it was non-malignant) and removed, as well as 2 small low grade mast cell tumors. He is now happy, healthy, and doing great, and looking for his own family! He loves to be with people, and will smile away happily -- and what a great smile! Dio is neutered, microchipped, up to date on shots, and ready to go to his new home! He is house and crate trained, and walks pretty well ... (Read More)on a leash. Please contact us with any questions! (Less)

Meet Angus, a handsome, 7 year old Cattledog mix. He is a fun, active guy looking for a home where he can be an active partner. For those who know this breed, you will know that this is an ideal age. He is full of action but has none of the puppy craziness that lasts in Cattledogs for the first few years. Angus is polite and ready for adventure. Angus is smart, as you would expect with this breed, and has had some professional training. He is good on leash and rides nicely in the car. He is also crate trained and house trained. He would be a wonderful work-out buddy. He is all that you would anticipate. He is loyal and looks to his ... (Read More)person to engage with him. He does alert when someone comes to the house, so it is helpful if someone has breed experience to know how to thank him for alerting and then ask him to stand down. Angus is a social guy and enjoys companionship with his people. He is nice with men, women, and even children. He has been around horses and other dogs and does well. He is an affectionate guy who also loves to play. Squeaky toys are a big hit with him. Angus is ready for his forever home. Breed experience and a vet check are required to adopt Angus. (Less)

5 year old neutered male Queensland heeler mix that we are seeking a new home for. Looking for a loving home for this very smart, very loyal dog. Loves people but doesn't like our male jack Russell (this is why we are re-homing him). Would probably chase cats, so would be better in a home without cats or other dogs. Small children would not be a good match since he has a very strong herding instinct and would chase and likely knock them down. Needs lots of exexcise and gets anxious if not exercised enough. A large yard, or even better, land to run around on would be ideal. Potty trained. Crate trained (loves to sleep in his crate). His crate ... (Read More)and bed will come with him. She is housebroken, crate trained, and has great inside manners. Nellie is a quiet girl who likes to go for walks and rides in the car.

Pilot was named for his ability to help Rocky, his blind dog friend he had at the shelter, to get around. Pilot is a young Labrador and Border Collie mix, about six or seven months old. He was very scared when he first arrived at the shelter, but has responded well and quickly to treats and gentle friends. This dog really loves to play with other dogs! He and Rocky had a great time and he was able to win over an older female and romp with her also. He appears to be respectful to cats and friendly to people. He could still stand to have his confidence built up with continued training, but he is a willing student. Pilot also loves the water! ... They gave me up because they brought home another dog and he was very aggressive towards me so they voted on who they wanted to stay and sadly the new dog got to stay and I was tossed aside. My rescuers dream would be for me to get adopted into a very active family that ... (Read More)likes hikes long walks or camping trips and kids is also a plus! Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered

This animal is available to licensed rescue groups only.  Please do not enquire unless with a licensed rescue group. Check out Turbo, a seemingly super mellow guy. He is a NEUTERED male, 3 year old, 62 pound black and white Border Collie mix. He absolutely melts with joy when his ears are scratched and was wonderful on the leash with his handler. Turbo sat very well on command and seems HIGHLY TRAINABLE. He has beautiful soulful eyes and one floppy ear that folds down when he's listening. We introduced Turbo to another dog at the shelter and he did great, so we think he might do well with another large dog in the home. Unfortunately, this sweet boy is RESCUE ONLY due to a bite incident. As a result, we would recommend he go to an experienced owner and a ... (Read More)home without children just to be safe. Turbo has been at the shelter since May 13th, 2015 and is in DESPERATE need of a rescue who can help this SWEET boy transition into a life as the BEST BUDDY he was born to be. Let's help Turbo! All North Central animals come spayed/neutered, microchipped and current on all their shots (including rabies). North Central LA City shelter; 3201 Lacy St., Los Angeles, CA (Less)

Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Backstory: Happy and his life long companion, a Beagle, both seniors were dumped at a shelter in LA county by their owners. A rescue came and took the Beagle, leaving Happy behind. We were told of this story and rescued him. Happy has been in foster care for 3 months and he still has moments where he looks very sad, still missing his best friend. Happy is great with humans and other dogs. he is NOT good with cats or small farm animals. Happy is a very affectionate and loving boy............unless you tell him to do something. He was apparently the alpha in his last home and took orders from nobody. His current foster has made ... (Read More)progress with him but feels somebody more assertive would be the best thing for him. We do have a trainer avaiable by phone to help with this issue, which is very fixable with a confident human alpha. When we first got Happy, he was so filthy and matted that he had to be shaved down but his coat has since grown out beautifully. He is a senior boy that deserves a warm bed and a loving home to spend his golden years. If you are interested in this boy, please fill out our adoption application: http://www.australianshepherdsfurever.org/adoption-application Happy's adoption fee is 150 and all fees are used for future rescue efforts. PIease Read Before Adopting a Border Collie in California
Border Collie Dogs can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. Border Collies are extremely intelligent, faithful dogs who live to please their masters. Border Collies need lots of attention and praise. They respond to high level obedience training and make excellent Frisbee dogs and farm workers. Border Collies do well in large yards or with acreage and they need a job to do. If a Border Collie becomes bored, he will find his own job to do and it may not be the owner's idea of work. Border Collies do well with older children and other dogs, and some Border Collies can coexist with cats. However, it depends on the dog, and generally Border Collies should not be trusted with non-canine pets.
