6 yr. old Border Collie, given to us by Woods Humane in San Luis Obispo, Really nice guy! Took him on his first pack walk: great on or off leash, comes to the coaches whistle already. Fantastic in the car, totally dog and human social. Loves to be groomed. He's a tall boy, long and lean, could stand to gain a few pounds. Whoever had him gave him excellent dental care. Lobo is a house dog. Sleeps in my room on a dog bed. Perfect manners. Love this boy! He knows how to use a dog door. And he's perfect with other dogs. Lobo is super tall, came in thin, he will put on weight, but he will not get shorter! Lobo with the right amount of weight ... (Read More)on him could weigh about 75 - 90 lbs., he SO tall! Animal ID: 120210Feta (female)

Border Collie    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Oh, Feta! (Yes, we went with cheeses for mama and her litter.) What a sweet journey we have been able to take with this very beautiful girl of only around one-year-old. When we first met, and rescued, Feta she was in a shelter with her four two-week-old pups and scared to death. It was clear that she had either not had a very good experience with humans, or more likely, that she had had very little, if any, human contact up to that point. Feta would try her hardest to be invisible, and when she could not avoid human contact, she would lie on her side and literally freeze, hoping we would just go away. She had no fear aggression even ... (Read More)though she had her pups to protect. Slowly but surely Feta began to trust us and eventually her tail began to wag when she knew we were going to pay attention to her and her pups. (Cheese was one thing she could not resist - thus the names.) After only five short weeks Feta now seeks out human attention and companionship. She even comes over and puts her paws on our legs or hands to get attention. There is still a touch of fear when she hears a door open and she'll seek a spot to hide but then comes right out again. Feta is crate-trained and sleeps through the night in our house without a peep. We are still working with her being OK on lead, but she has a ways to go with that. If you are looking for a beautiful and very intelligent girl, in body and soul, to make a part of your life, and you have the gentleness and patience to continue helping this girl be all she can be, then you might be the perfect match for her. Please go to our website, throwmeabonedogrescue.org, and click on Adoption Process. There you can read about what we need from you for pre-approval and find the link for the application you need to complete and submit. Animal ID: 120213Baby Brie - Ad. Pend. (female)

Border Collie Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Baby Brie and her litter mates, Bleu, Cheddar and Colby, are simply adorable. Their mama is definitely a Border Collie (in one of the pictures) and it appears the papa may have been an Australian Shepherd and even possibly some lab mixed in there. Whatever their mix, they are smart, playful, affectionate, and as said earlier, simply adorable. These pups came from a shelter where they were brought with their mama and we were able to rescue them at about two weeks of age. Now around eight weeks old, they will be spayed/neutered in about a week and ready to go to new homes. We would like to find homes for the pups where their family ... (Read More)has some experience with Border Collies or some other herding breed since they will be smart dogs that bond closely with their people and will want to work alongside them. Rescue Me ID: 14-04-19-00327Picasso (male)

Border Collie Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Aggressive

Meet Picasso! He needs a new home in two weeks!! A very well-trained 5.5 year old Aus.Cattle Dog in need of loving new home with lots of room to roam. Rescued in 2010 as a 14 mo. puppy. Lived with me for 4 years. Has a history of aggression - but no reports. No kids, parties, or too many new people. He is extremely smart, loving, high energy, and talented. He's a farm dog who has been living in the city for three years. He needs a patient, loving, and experienced Cattle Dog owner who understands rescues and rehabilitation. Read more to hear our story.. Thank you for your interest in helping me find a home for my sweet dog, Picasso. ... (Read More) About Picasso I rescued him in April 2010 from the Oregon Humane Society. He was only about 14 months old and had already had 5 homes - so he comes with a special set of rescue dog issues as well as his Cattle Dog uniqueness. %A0I gave him the birthday of Feb. 14, because he is the sweet little love of my life. He is exceptionally well trained and always eager to learn more. He has been trained to wait at corners off-leash, sit at the beginning of a block and wait until called - even if I am nearly 100 yards away. %A0He follows hand commands to sit, stay, and lay. He sits and waits until I say it is okay to eat his food. %A0We do fence hopping agility training at the park and he LOVES chasing frisbees (note: he is not a retriever, he's a herding dog, so if I'm tossing a disc alone, I walk a lot to pick it up and throw it again... it is much better in pairs :)). %A0We go for two 30-45 minute walks per day or a 1.5 hour hike, but he LOVES to be off-leash in a wide open space to run and chase things and that is more difficult to come by in Oakland. We lived in Portland where parks are plentiful and neighborhoods are very safe so walking him everyday for an hour in the morning and in the evening was easy. %A0We then lived on a 30 acre farm for three months where he chased all manner of critters and loved the outdoor life. In early 2011, we moved to Oakland and where walking to the park meant encountering many aggressive yard dogs barking through fences, and a sense that he needed to protect me more. The neighborhood I live in is not close to a park and I work in SF everyday, so I don't have the same time availability I used to in order to give him the attention and constant training he needs. %A0These factors combined have made him a more aggressive and agitated dog. %A0 He has a history of biting people that come too close into his space. %A0No one has reported him because they all have acknowledged it was their fault: reaching down into his face to pet him without me present. %A0He is great with smaller dogs, but is defensive around larger dogs. Because of his special needs, the challenges of finding a place with a big yard in a little city, and my work commitments, I've come to the painful decision that, to do what is best for him, he needs a new home. What I'm looking for in a new family A kid-free family that is passionate and informed about Cattle Dogs and has a lot of space to roam. %A0In my dream environment, he is on a farm or vineyard with a financially stable couple between the ages of 35-50 that does not have kids or housemates. They are long-time dog owners and lovers who are committed to co-parenting Picasso as their own for at least two years (or perhaps the rest of his happy life) and loving him as unconditionally as I do - if not more. %A0They have the time and energy to keep his mind and body active.%A0 His new family does not use violence to correct behavior (he has an e-tap collar that he has been trained on for that). %A0His new family does not have a lot of visitors or big parties. %A0If/when they do, Picasso has a secluded and healthy environment to keep him and visitors safe. %A0His new family has a history of owning Cattle Dogs and understands their intellect, charm, sweetness, and special needs. %A0His new family is happy to have him tag along for most everything (beach trips, hikes, trips into town) and is comfortable putting a cage muzzle on him if he is walking around in high traffic areas or new stimulating environments. %A0 It is necessary that I be able to schedule visits and take him for some weekends. I am happy to moderately financially support him as well to supplement food costs and any doctor visits ($50-$100/mo). %A0I am also be the one to call for any major health/life decisions. (Less)

I cannot keep him much longer, I have 4 dogs of my own and no time to introduce them, along with one week old kittens to care for. He has done some ranch work and I am able to put you in contact with his owner for more information.

Meet Larry the Border Collie - So smart! Gentle, playful, sweet, and gets along with all dogs. Even when attacked, Larry laid down and wouldn't fight back. Larry is SO talented with a ball. Throw the ball, he will quickly retrieve it, lay it at your feet, and then take his nose and gently roll the ball so it is exactly right between your shoes...... looks up at you for 'more please.' Great with kids, too. Walks with a leash just perfectly. At his temporary last home, he liked to sleep in a crate. He'll hang out in it even when the door is wide open. After feeding, he wants to lay his head in your lap to 'thank' you. The lucky, perfect ... (Read More)forever home for him is out there, he is going to bring lots of laughs & entertainment a special someone or family. Larry's Story: First turned up at a house in the high desert last summer. He was shabby and dirty and both tips of his ears were missing, one was wounded and infected. All he wanted to do was get inside the fenced yard where other dogs were, and these dogs were having none of it. Even so, Larry wanted IN. The rescuer opened the back of her car to get out bowls for food & water, and he jumped right in and wouldn't get out. She had to put a leash & collar on him just to get him out to go potty. He let her do this. He is very gentle and sweet. When she got in the car to sit with him, he just buried his head in her lap and laid there. It was the weekend, and the rescuer was not thinking of what she was going to do with him come Monday, because it was so busy at the time. That was OK. He was perfectly happy in her car. The neighbors really liked him, and offered to foster him. So much going on in everyones lives, no one really tried re-homing Larry. A few weeks ago he got out of the foster's yard. Went looking for them... amazingly. he wound up back at his original owner. You'd think that was a good thing... think again. The whole story was revealed. Larry's original owners didn't live not far from where he was discovered trying to get into the back yard. By now, Larry had his new name and tag on, the former owners called saying they had found him, not admitting that they were his owners from when he was a pup! It was then discovered Larry was about 8 years old... he seems to be a very young dog! The fosters picked him up. After witnessing the horrors of what they saw at Larry's original owners home, the fosters took him back. We won't go into that, but it's now understood why Larry ran away from there in the first place. Why found his way and went back. . . only a dog would know. . . Photo's updated soon. Stay tuned. He is neutered, up to date on vaccinations. Adoption fee is $150. Larry is being fostered near Palm Springs/Coachella Valley/Riverside county area, zip code is 92241. Take this into consideration. It's possible the foster may meet an approved adopter. For an application to meet Larry, please complete the steps outlined on http://cchdrescue.com/adoptionprocess.html. Animal ID: 180042Tempo (male)

Border Collie Mix    Age: Puppy

Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Needs Vaccinations, Aggressive, Fearful/Anxious

Tempo has been an amazing companion for us in so many ways. We love him dearly and only want to see him happy. It is important that whoever he finds a home with is familiar with his history & temperament. He has unfortunately shown signs of aggressive behavior and has in fact bit 4 people without drawing blood. He shows no signs of aggression with us, though sometimes dominant behavior we have been working to correct. His aggression seems to stem from extreme fear of strangers and other dogs. I'm almost positive if he were introduced to a healthy social environment he could learn a lot. We have been exhausting all of our resources finding ... (Read More)trainers and the like but do not feel fully equipped to rehabilitate him. We do not believe he is a lost cause by any means and do not wish to bring him to a shelter but because we run a business out of our home and often have a lot of people coming in and out of the office as well as droves of tourists walking right near all of our living room and kitchen windows. We've blocked all of the windows as much as possible but it is still a source of anxiety for him. We are in the slower season currently but when summer comes we are worried it could increase his aggression to have so much foot traffic so close to our home. Unfortunately, he is a liability for us and our boss has asked us to re-home him. We rescued him when he was about 4 months old from a family who had an autistic child who, we were told, was being unfortunately abusive. At the time of adoption he was very docile. As it turned out he had parvovirus and after a couple of weeks of heart wrenching care he managed to pull through and his full personality began to come out. (He is clear of the virus and not a threat to other dogs and only needs his adult boosters at this time.) His positive attributes include the fact that he's loving, extremely intelligent, loves his ball, loves to swim, literally jumps through hoops and could probably learn any trick imaginable. We began crate training him a few months ago due to his constant bullying/higher energy level of our other dog who is a very docile and submissive 4 year old female. He's been responding very well to the crate training but there are (busier) days where he spends much more time there than any of us would prefer. We have been able to introduce him to friends so long as he's crated when they arrive and gets used to their presence. Tempo has every capability of being someone's perfect dog but due to his temperament and our current situation, we are overwhelmed. If interested, please contact with any questions or concerns or to arrange a meeting. (Less)

6 yr. old Border Collie, given to us by Woods Humane in San Luis Obispo, Really nice guy! Took him on his first pack walk: great on or off leash, comes to the coaches whistle already. Fantastic in the car, totally dog and human social. Loves to be groomed. He's a tall boy, long and lean, could stand to gain a few pounds. Whoever had him gave him excellent dental care. Border Collie Mix    Age: Young Adult

This is Rockne. He is a 40 pound border collie/black lab mixc and probably 4-6 years old. We adopted him from the Mission Viejo Animal Shelter in November, 2012. He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on shots and vet checks, and even had his teeth cleaned last year. He is a wonderfully sweet dog. We have four children, ages 6-12 and he has been awesome with all of them. He never has accidents, never chews on things, doesn't get on furniture and is so eager to please. He is smart, well mannered, and extremely laid back and always stays out of trouble. When he first became part of our family, he needed a little bit of training on the ... (Read More)leash and we use a shock collar when we walk him however he is almost always perfect now and shocks are rarely necessary. We have occasionally boarded him at a doggy daycare and he has had no problems with other dogs there. We are devastated to be looking for another home for Rockne but his border collie genes have given him the herding instinct so he occasionally tries to herd small children that visit our home. He has never bitten anyone and I don't think he ever would but we have too many small children in and out of our home. He would be best in a home with children over 10. We have had so many tears in our house this weekend and we are determined to find a happy but more suitable home for Rocky. He is such a good boy. We would be happy to train the new owner on use of the shock collar and send it along with Rockne. We can also send his bed with him and are willing to do everything possible to find him a good home. Please contact Michelle at mail@villaruz.com if you can be Rockne's new forever home. (Less)

Animal ID: CL1401Chloe - Courtesy Listi (female)

Border Collie Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Chloe is a courtesy listing and is not actually a part of our rescue. If you are interested in meeting and potentially adopting Chloe you will need to contact her rescuer at: 925-525-5721. Chloe is a beautiful young girl, just under a year old now. She and her brother, Leo, were found running alongside a county road by a Good Samaritan who still has them. He has made sure they are up to date on everything from vaccinations to de-worming. Luckily for Chloe and her future family, this Good Samaritan has also trained champion hunting labs and and the following is information about Chloe straight from him: Chloe is between 45-50 pounds ... (Read More)and is on the energetic side and is the dominant of the two. She will need a firm handler as she has been living with her bigger brother and is used to playing rough. Chloe loves to give kisses, though, and will train easily with treats and a firm hand. Chloe is kind of skittish, especially of things in people's hands like she has had some abuse - poor baby. She is now sitting, walking on a leash and learning to heel. She is also learning to kennel-up. Chloe will require lots of attention as she longs to have her belly scratched. She was under-weight when she was found and, due to this, can be very food protective from other dogs. However, she will not bite at humans over food (I move her food bowl all of the time.) Chloe loves to explore the yard and eat small things. If both she and her brother are adopted together, Chloe will need to be watched with other dogs as she is very protective of her brother, thus I recommend splitting them up. Put her in a kennel alongside of her brother and she does not make a peep. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-01-11-00527Nick (male)

Border Collie    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Very High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Needs Vaccinations

Nick, my Border Collie, desperately needs a new home. I moved, and he has been living with my parents, but they can no longer keep him. He is six years old, neutered, tri-colored, and is incredibly smart. Loves agility (can do tunnels, jumps, etc), bike rides, swimming, chasing tennis balls, knows dozens of tricks. The one problem with him is when indoors and cornered or challenged, he snaps. Has bitten a handful of times, which is why I haven't been able to find him a home. The only place I'd be comfortable with him going is a home with adults, who know about border collies and their weirdness. Ideal home would be with adults, and with ... (Read More)other dogs close to his size or larger. Has never had a bite incident outdoors (we believe it's a territorial/cornered/fear issue), so him being an outdoor dog (with warm shelter) would be ideal. Positive Qualities: Healthy, smart, fast, alert, learns very quickly, eager to please/play, never tires out, good on a leash (runs alongside for bike rides on a leash) housebroken, not destructive, no separation anxeity, barks when he hears a noise but stops when told to hush, knows basic commands (heel, sit, stay, down) and many tricks. Loves water and swimming, jumping, walks, agility, bike rides, playing with leaves, learning new tricks. Lets you know when he needs out of the house, no accidents in the house since he was a puppy. Shy but friendly with new people, leaves things alone, even food, when told to. Does not jump on people or at gates/doors. Excited at first but calms down quickly. Usually comes when called. Rides ok in a car, trained to 'go potty' before getting into a car. Negative Qualities: Not reliable when called off-leash. Can be worked with. Has bitten family members, drawing blood and causing puncture wounds. Bites have been accidentally provoked. Triggers seem to be being woken/startled (bit foot near him), weakness in other dogs, jealousy over food with other dogs and people (sometimes). You can pet and talk to him and even reach into his food bowl though, without anything happening. After the bite he growls and stands over the person/dog and would bite again if we hadn't thrown something at him. After some bites he wags his tail and acts 'sorry' (licks his lips and tried to nuzzle, tail wagging, ears down) Acts fearful when he hears the sprinklers go on, and hides. If you try to get him to come out he growls and snaps to get you to leave him alone. Bears teeth and snarls when threatened. Last time he bit, there was food in the room and someone was playing on the floor with him. Told him to 'go find your toy' with a gentle push in the toy's direction. He turned and bit the person's arm three times, then went after her feet before I was able to scare him off. Would NOT trust around small children AT ALL. HATES skateboards & scooters, and goes crazy when he sees on on the street. goes after the board, not the rider. (We think it's the sound of the wheels). Please contact me if you know of anyone who might want Nick. He is a lovable boy, with the above stated issues. I moved, and he is living with my parents, but they are no longer able to keep him. I need to find a home for him by the end of February (at the latest). Otherwise I will have no choice but to have him put down :( Please email, text or call. PIease Read Before Adopting a Border Collie in California
Border Collie Dogs can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. Border Collies are extremely intelligent, faithful dogs who live to please their masters. Border Collies need lots of attention and praise. They respond to high level obedience training and make excellent Frisbee dogs and farm workers. Border Collies do well in large yards or with acreage and they need a job to do. If a Border Collie becomes bored, he will find his own job to do and it may not be the owner's idea of work. Border Collies do well with older children and other dogs, and some Border Collies can coexist with cats. However, it depends on the dog, and generally Border Collies should not be trusted with non-canine pets.
