Rescue Me ID: 16-10-17-00188Winter (female)

Border Collie Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

This is Winter - she is about two years old and is a Border Collie mix. Rather than give you our limited knowledge of her we are gong to post what her foster home had to say about her: Beware this girl with steal your heart and your socks! Winter is a very active, playful, girl who loves fetch, toys, and socks. She is a bit of a 'busy bee' that is into everything and wants to be a part of whatever you are doing. Still is very much a puppy, in spite of the fact they've guessed her age at 2 years. She loves to chew, so will need some chew toys. She also enjoys snuggling on the couch and belly rubs, once she has gotten some of her energy ... (Read More)out. Winter is smart and food motivated. She has learned 'sit' and 'down'. These commands are still new, so she still needs hand signals and treats at least some of the time. She is also learning to walk well on a leash, and to sit and wait to go through doors. She is crate trained, and will go into her crate for CHEESE. Also Winter is used to peanut butter in a Kong toy which helps entertain her when she is crated. She is working on being house broken, and has not had an accident in the house in over a week. Winter can be a bit shy and slow to warm up to strangers, and new situations. But once she knows you she is a love. While I do not have children or other dogs, she is reported to be kid and dog friendly. In fact she was the' go-to' dog at the shelter to test other dogs for dog friendless. Winter was loose in a cotton field and after much effort to catch her without success, they finally caught her in a live trap. They thought she was one of the farmer's dogs. She was not, but he took her for a while, but brought her back to the shelter saying she did not want to be a farm dog. It was said she was 'attached to him at the hip.' I did not know how to write it up but thought it was important to pass on that she is afraid of men's boots and dress shoes, and even my husband Air Force Uniform. We have worked on this and she is better but it is still an issue. She adores my husband but the first time be put on his Air Force uniform with his boots she barked and would not come near him. We used food and praise to slowly get her over this. There was vast improvement after our first session, and she was nearly over it by our third session. It however did not translate to his other boots and dress shoe that she is still some what afraid of as we did not have time to repeat it enough with them. She is fine if she can been on the couch were the shoes can't get her. He can sit beside her and she is all wiggles and happiness. She will now wiggle and greet him in his AF uniform even with the boots on, normally with out any hesitation. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Border Collie in Iowa
Border Collie Dogs can make good pets in Iowa if they match your IifestyIe. Border Collies are extremely intelligent, faithful dogs who live to please their masters. Border Collies need lots of attention and praise. They respond to high level obedience training and make excellent Frisbee dogs and farm workers. Border Collies do well in large yards or with acreage and they need a job to do. If a Border Collie becomes bored, he will find his own job to do and it may not be the owner's idea of work. Border Collies do well with older children and other dogs, and some Border Collies can coexist with cats. However, it depends on the dog, and generally Border Collies should not be trusted with non-canine pets.
